Korean

Korean (한국어/조선말) is the official language of the Republic of Korea and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It uses different official forms in each nation-state; it is also one of the two official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and Changbai Korean Autonomous County of the People’s Republic of China. Approximately 80 million people worldwide speak Korean.

Korea in Hong Kong

The number of Korean citizens in Hong Kong is rather small. Approximately 23.1% of Koreans in Hong Kong work in the finance, insurance, real estate, or business services field; one of the highest proportions out of all ethnic minorities.

Tsim Sha Tsui’s Kimberley Street, a side street off of Kimberley Road, also boasts a small concentration of Korean restaurants and grocery stores owned by long-term

Korean residents of Hong Kong, and has been dubbed Hong Kong’s “Little Korea” as a result.

Korean Pop-Culture

The seed of Korean TV drama’s popularity was sown back in 2004-2005, when the Korean period drama “Dae Janggeum” was widely broadcast in Asian countries (Hong Kong included) with significant Chinese communities and became an instant great hit. Fast forward to about 2012, the phenomenon of what we now know as the Korean Wave (a.k.a. Hallyu)is already widespread across Asia. On top of TV dramas, Korean entertainment companies also started to export variety shows and music to other Asian countries and the world. It started with the singer PSY and his very memorable song “Gangnam Style”. His show business peers such as the likes of Big Bang, EXO or Girls Generation -just to name a few-  are very popular among the younger generation in Hong Kong until now. This export of music and TV programs, boosted the interest in Korean culture in general in our city. In addition, there is a continuously high interest in Korean food as well as travelling to Korea. We at Mastery in Languages are also witnessing a steady uptrend in learning the Korean language.
