With over 500 million speakers worldwide, Spanish is the most widely spoken Romance language and an official language in 21 countries. Its reach extends far beyond its European origins, spanning continents and cultures in a way that few languages can claim.
From its roots in the Iberian Peninsula, Spanish was carried across the Atlantic through trade, exploration, and colonisation, eventually taking firm hold in the Americas. Today, it is the official language of nearly all of Central and South America—with the notable exception of Brazil—as well as Equatorial Guinea in Africa and, of course, Spain itself.
In the United States, Spanish has a particularly strong and growing presence. With approximately 45 million native speakers—more than the entire population of Spain—it is the second most spoken language in the country. Furthermore, over 6 million students are currently learning Spanish in the U.S., making it the second largest Hispanophone nation in the world.
This global influence has not gone unnoticed in Asia. Among Chinese learners, Spanish is steadily gaining popularity as a language of business, travel, and cultural exploration. In Hong Kong, this trend is especially evident: secondary school students increasingly choose Spanish as their second language, while adults are embracing it as a second or third language for professional and personal enrichment.
